Protect Illinois Communities Act
Protect Illinois Communities Act (PICA)
On January 10, 2023, the PICA was signed into law and went into effect immediately. The Act regulates assault weapons and other devices. Individuals who possessed assault weapons and other devices listed in the Act before it took effect must submit an endorsement affidavit through their Firearm Owner’s Identification Card account by January 1, 2024.
What items require registration?
Registration is required for items delineated in the Act, including:
- Assault Weapons;
- Assault Weapon Attachments;
- .50 Caliber Rifles;
- .50 BMG Caliber Cartridges
The PICA definition of “assault weapon” is very broad and includes certain firearms, firearms with parts or combination of parts designed or intended to operate as an assault weapon as defined in the Act.
