COOK COUNTY, IL – The Cook County Sheriff’s Office today announced the launch of its new “Book Bus” – a mobile library initiative designed to bring thousands of books directly to communities across Cook County that the Sheriff operates in and that often lack access to traditional library services.
The Book Bus has been creatively repurposed from a former jail transport bus and transformed into a vibrant mobile library. Chicago Wrap, a local business, gave the vehicle a full interior and exterior makeover, turning it into a welcoming, colorful space for children and families.
With the Book Bus, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its mission to foster community connection, promote literacy, and provide innovative services that extend beyond traditional law enforcement in the many communities in which the Sheriff operates.
“This is more than just a bus—it’s a vehicle for opportunity, imagination, and hope,” said Sheriff Tom Dart. “Books should never feel out of reach. Reimagining what a library can look like, we’re bringing stories, knowledge, and imagination straight into the neighborhoods that need them most.”
So far, more than 3,900 books have been donated to stock the shelves, thanks to generous contributions from Kids Can Read, Books 4 Cause, and the Oak Lawn Library. Children who visit the bus will be given a membership card and are encouraged to return books during future visits. However, unlike traditional libraries, there will be no penalties for unreturned books, ensuring that reading remains accessible, not burdensome.
Sean Heffner, owner of Chicago Wrap, added: “We’re thrilled to have played a part in bringing the Book Bus to life. It’s an honor for our company to support such a worthy endeavor, and I know the impact on young people who don’t always have books will be tremendous.”
