Basic Correctional Officer (BCO) Training Academy
The Cook County Sheriff’s Correctional Academy is an approved Basic Correctional Officer Training Academy recognized by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board
To attend the Cook County Sheriff’s Correctional Officer Academy, a person must:

- Be a United States citizen.
- Be 21 years of age or older. Applicants may apply at 20 years of age; however, their file will not be reviewed by the merit board until they have turned 21 years of age.
- Have a valid high school diploma or a G.E.D. acceptable to the sheriff’s merit board.
- Have a valid driver’s license or state identification card acceptable to the sheriff’s merit board
- Have a valid firearm owners’ identification card (FOID), or be able to obtain a FOID card before certification.
- Successfully complete a written exam and a Physical Ability Test.
