COOK COUNTY, IL – Two convicted felons are charged with gun and drug felonies after Sheriff’s Police recovered multiple firearms, various suspected narcotics, and drug paraphernalia from a home in south suburban Harvey, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.
On Wednesday, Feb. 19, members of the Organized Crime Division and Hostage Barricade Team executed a search warrant at a home in the 15000 block of Lincoln Avenue following an investigation into drug activity at the residence.
Prior to executing the search warrant, officers observed a resident of the home, 46-year-old Demario Hughes, enter a vehicle and drive away. Officers knew Hughes possessed a revoked driver’s license and conducted a traffic stop where they arrested him without incident.
Following Hughes’ arrest, officers observed 43-year-old Dennis McCarty, of the 0-100 block of North Bonson Street in Platteville, WI, leave the residence and return a short time later.
Officers then executed the search warrant and recovered the following from the residence:
- Two firearms, one a non-serialized 9mm “ghost” gun, and the other a .22 caliber handgun reported stolen in Valparaiso, IN.
- A 31-round extended magazine and nearly 100 rounds of live ammunition of various calibers.
- A vehicle parked behind the home reported stolen in Chicago.
- Suspected narcotics including 15 grams of suspected ecstasy, 5 grams of a gray/purple powder, 14 grams of suspected cannabis, approximately 10 grams of suspected psilocybin mushrooms, 2 grams of suspected cocaine, 10 grams of suspected crack cocaine, and several pieces of drug paraphernalia.
McCarty was taken into custody inside the residence, and officers subsequently obtained and executed a search warrant for his vehicle where they recovered a .45 caliber handgun. Neither McCarty nor Hughes possess valid FOID cards.
On Thursday, Feb. 20, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges against both Hughes and McCarty of felony Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon/Felon, as well as multiple felony drug charges.
They were both ordered detained pending trial during their initial hearing today at the Markham Courthouse. Their next court hearings are scheduled on March 5.
The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
