COOK COUNTY, IL – A man facing murder charges in the shooting death of a Loyola University student will be facing new charges after Cook County Jail staff found a 6-inch shank in his possession, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.
At approximately 8 a.m. on May 28, corrections staff learned that Jose Medina, 26, was in possession of a weapon. Correctional officers searched him and recovered a sharpened piece of metal with a handle fashioned out of medical tape from his pants pocket.
Medina has been in jail custody since March 23. He is charged with the murder of 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman, who was shot to death on March 19 at a Rogers Park beach.
On May 29, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a felony charge of possession of contraband in a penal institution. Please contact the State’s Attorney’s Office for court information.
