COOK COUNTY, IL – Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart is proud to announce that members of the Sheriff’s Honor Guard were awarded the Eternal Flame Award by the Illinois Chapter for Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) in recognition of their unwavering support for the surviving families of officers killed in the line of duty.
The annual Eternal Flame Award is presented to agencies, individuals, and businesses who have demonstrated a significant and deep commitment to the C.O.P.S. organization.
“Members of the Sheriff’s Honor Guard perform important and selfless work in serving and recognizing our fallen officers and families,” Sheriff Dart said. “Officers risk their lives every day to serve and protect the community. It is our duty to help care for the families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.”
The Sheriff’s Honor Guard have provided assistance to survivors of fallen officers all across Illinois by helping with funeral arrangements and recognition ceremonies as well as overall emotional support in navigating the tragic loss of their loved ones.
According to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, more than 100 federal, state, tribal, and local law enforcement officers have died in the line-of-duty this year.
“I’d like to thank the Illinois C.O.P.S organization for recognizing the efforts of our Honor Guard,” Sheriff Dart said. “My Office will continue to support and work closely with Illinois C.O.P.S. to ensure survivors are never alone.”
