COOK COUNTY, IL – A 23-year-old Chicago man has been charged with attempted murder after a Sheriff’s Police investigation found he shot two people at a cemetery, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.
On Wednesday, Jan. 29, Sheriff’s Police responded to a shooting at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Evergreen Park. Officers learned that the offender shot a 25-year-old man and a 24-year-old man following a fight during a burial service at the cemetery. The victims were taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers also learned the offender pointed a gun at a third man.
Sheriff’s Police officers located Roger Nava, who matched the description of the shooter, near the cemetery and took him into custody. Two loaded firearms were recovered from Nava’s possession.
Further investigation by Sheriff’s Police Detectives identified Nava, of the 4300 block of South Whipple, as the shooter.
On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved three counts of attempt first degree murder against Nava.
He is scheduled to appear for his initial hearing today at the Markham Courthouse.
The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
